SAN Interoperability (Dell | EMC and PowerVault)

Converting the PowerVault 650F

Existing PowerVault 650F DPEs can be converted to a Dell | EMC FC4700. Upgrading the PowerVault 650F, however, requires changes to the fabric, hosts and supporting software in addition to changes to the storage device itself.

NOTICE: The conversion from a PowerVault 650F to a Dell | EMC FC4700 will destroy all existing LUNs and the data contained on them. Back up any data before the upgrade to make sure the data is recovered.

NOTE: It is not possible to upgrade the PowerVault 660F to any Dell | EMC storage arrays.

A careful examination of the current configuration is required in advance of the upgrade to determine specific requirements:

  • A Dell | EMC DPS only uses optical cable. The server's HBAs (for direct connect) and switch for the SAN fabric must support optical components.
  • The PowerVault 650F that will be upgraded must have two LCCs which are connected to two SPSs.
  • Each SP must have a fixed IP address.

Collecting Hardware Configuration
In order to accurately migrate to a Dell | EMC FC4700, certain information needs to be collected. Run Data Detective against the PowerVault array or power down the unit and manually inspect the drives. Any hard drive not compatible will need to be upgraded as well.

Software and Hardware Upgrade
For any Windows system that will connect to the converted unit, uninstall any of the following software applications if they are installed:
  • Data Agent
  • Data Supervisor
  • Qlconfig
  • Qldirect
  • ATF
  • Storage C

After the software has been removed, shut down the server and replace the HBAs if needed. For the hardware upgrade, follow the instructions in the upgrade kit.
