SAN Interoperability (Dell | EMC and PowerVault)

Dell PowerVault SAN components and Dell | EMC SAN components can coexist as long as several procedures are followed.

Switches

With a switch firmware upgrade, PowerVault 51F and 56F switches may be used with both PowerVault and Dell | EMC SAN components.

NOTICE: Setting these options requires that the switch be temporarily disabled. No data traffic through this switch will be allowed until this procedure is complete.

  1. Attach to the switch via Telnet, using Admin as the user name and the default password of password.
  2. Enter the switchDisable command.
  3. Enter the Configure command.
  4. When prompted to configure the Fabric Parameters, enter Y.
  5. Pressing Enter at each option keeps the current setting.
  6. VC Encoded Address Mode: (0..1) [1] is displayed. If the option is currently set to 1 (current configuration is listed inside brackets), enter <0> and press Enter.
  7. Press Enter until you are prompted to configure the Virtual Channels.
  8. Enter N to skip the Virtual Channel Configuration.
  9. Enter Y when prompted to configure the Arbitrated Loop Parameters.
  10. Press Enter once more to display the Always Send RSCN?: (0..1) [1] option.
  11. If the option is currently set to 1 (current configuration is listed inside brackets), enter <0> and press Enter.
  12. Enter N when prompted to configure the System Services.
  13. Enter the switchEnable command.

The Dell | EMC storage processors will now log into the Dell PowerVault 51F or 56F Fibre Channel switch.

Zoning
In order for a PowerVault SAN and a Dell | EMC SAN to coexist, they must be zoned into their own separate zones. This will logically isolate the two SAN products. File sharing between the two SAN zones is not possible.

PowerVault Tape Drives

PowerVault tape drives can operate in either a Dell | EMC SAN or a Dell PowerVault SAN. Because of the zoning requirements, PowerVault tape drives must be included in both a PowerVault SAN zone and a Dell | EMC SAN zone.
