Dell PowerEdge 1650

Power Supply

The PowerEdge 1650 will support either a single 275W power supply (standard), or two 275W, hot-plug, redundant power supplies (optional).

The PowerEdge 1650 power sub-system consists of a PSDB board, 1+1 hot-plug redundant power supplies, cable harness, and two cooling fans per each power supply. The system has options for either an AC power supply, or a 48V power supply.

The power supplies can be accessed from the top of the system by opening the top left door. To remove the power supplies, grasp the handle and gently slide the power supply towards the back or front of the system. Once released, pull the power supply up and out of the system.

The power supply provides 12V DC and 3.3V STB. There are several DC-DC converters on the system board to convert 12V source to other voltage rails such as 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V, and 1.8V. Power is "soft-switched", allowing power cycling via a switch on the control panel, or via software control (through server management functions).

The power supplies only provide power to the system board. Power to the backplane and control panel is provided by DC-DC converters on the system board.

If only one power supply is ordered, there will be a "filler" in the open slot. By default, the primary power supply will be located towards the front of the system and the secondary (or redundant) will be located towards the back of the system. Also, each power supply corresponds with a power plug in the back. The left plug (facing the back of the server) corresponds to the primary power supply while the connector on the right corresponds with the secondary (redundant) power supply.
48 Volt DC-Power Supply
In June of 2002, Dell began shipping a 48-Volt DC power supply with the PowerEdge 1650. Below are some pictures of this option. Your PowerEdge 1650 must also have a 48-Volt PSDB and a 48-Volt dongle cable for this power option to work.

IMPORTANT - More Information CAUTION: A qualified electrician must perform all connections to DC power and safety grounds. The system must be safety grounded at the cabinet frame. All electrical wiring must comply with applicable local or national codes and practices.

PSDB Power Supply Distribution Board
The PSDB is located inside the power supply compartment to the left of the chassis, between two power supplies. It provides a means to connect AC to the power supplies and to provide 12V current to the system. The PSDB will work in conjunction with ESM3 and provide a centralized location for power control.

 Removing the PSDB

Step 1: With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the Phillips head screw that secures the power supply distribution board shield to the chassis.

Step 2: Grasp the power supply distribution board shield on both sides and lift straight up to remove.
