Dell PowerEdge 1650

Product Overview

The PowerEdge 1650 is a highly available, ultra rack-dense 1U (1.75-inch) general-purpose (GP) server ideally suited for front-end, network infrastructure, SAN, HPCC, and mainstream server application environments.

Product Benefits
The PowerEdge 1650 provides exceptional levels of availability, manageability, performance, and scalability in a 1U form factor, including hot-plug redundant power (optional) and cooling (standard), dual Pentium III processors (up to 1.4GHz), the ServerWorks HE SL chipset, dual 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots, remote management functionality via DRAC 3 or Embedded Remote Access Option (ERA/O), dual embedded Gigabit NICs, up to three hot-pluggable 1-inch SCSI hard drives or two non hot-pluggable IDE hard drives, integrated PERC 3/Di (enabled via a optional daughter board), dual channel embedded Ultra3 SCSI, and up to 4GB of RAM.
Product Features
Key features of the PowerEdge 1650 include:

  • Performance
    • Support for up to two Pentium III (FC-PGA2 370 socket) processors (up to 1.4GHz).
    • ServerWorks HE SL chipset with 133MHz front side bus, 133MHz memory, and 133MHz processors
    • Support for up to 4GB of ECC PC133 SDRAM (four SDRAM DIMM slots)
    • Support for two 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots (1 full length and 1 half length with dual processors).
    • An optional 5v riser card is available with 1 x 64-bit/66MHz PCI slot and 1 x 32-bit/33MHz PCI slots on separate buses. This riser card is required with DRAC3.
    • Dual embedded Intel Pro1000 Xt Gigabit NICs (I82544GC)
    • Dual channel integrated Ultra3 SCSI (160MB/s) controller (AIC-7899W) (one internal channel and one external channel)
    • RAID support with optional RAID on motherboard (ROMB) (PERC 3/Di) for internal drives and PERC3/DC for external SCSI storage enclosures
    • PERC 3/Di is the only option for the internal SCSI drives due to the cable-less design, which improves serviceability and airflow. It is implemented via a mezzanine board that includes the RAID processor, 128MB of RAM, and battery backup
  • Availability
    • Support for hot-plug redundant power (optional)
    • 1+1 275W power supplies (12V and 3.3VSB outputs only) with a PDB board
    • Support for hot-plug redundant cooling (standard), including variable speed fans
    • Support for up to 3 hot-pluggable 1" SCSI hard drives
    • RAID support with an optional PERC 3/Di or PERC 3/DC, both of which support 128MB of cache and battery backup for maximum availability and performance
    • Dual embedded Intel Pro1000 Xt Gigabit NICs (I82544GC) that support load balancing and failover
    • Up to 4GB of ECC protected SDRAM memory
    • Integrated hardware monitoring circuitry
  • Scalability
    • Support for up to 5 I/O devices
    • Two PCI slots on a riser card (1 full length and 1 short PCI card with two processors). There are two riser card options:
      • Two 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots on the same bus
      • One 64-bit/66MHz PCI slot and one 32-bit/33MHz PCI slot on separate buses. This riser supports 5V PCI cards and must be used with DRAC3.
    • Dual embedded Intel Pro1000 Xt Gigabit NICs (I82544GC) that support load balancing and failover
    • External Ultra3 SCSI port
    • Four SDRAM DIMM sockets (only PC133 DIMMs supported)
    • 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB Registered PC133 SDRAM support, up to 4GB of main memory
    • Support for up to 3 hot-pluggable 1" hard drives
    • Floppy drive and IDE CD drive (optional DVD drive available)
    • Highly serviceably (tool-less) 1U chassis
    • RAID support with an optional PERC 3/Di or PERC 3/DC cards
    • Rear ports:
      • One integrated PCI video (ATI Rage XL) with 8MB SDRAM
      • Identification push button with its LED (blue/amber)
      • PS/2 compatible mouse port
      • PS/2 compatible keyboard port
      • One 9-pin serial port
      • Two USB ports at the back
      • One external Ultra SCSI port
      • Two embedded Gigabit NICs
      • ERA/O dedicated connector
    • Front ports on control panel:
      • One combined PS/2 compatible mouse/keyboard port
      • One USB port
      • One integrated PCI video port
      • Power button
      • ID switch button
  • Other
    • Dell Server Assistant CD included
    • Dell OpenManage Software included
    • System may be used with or without bezel for greater flexibility in industry racks
    • Support for 4-post (Dell cabinet), 2-post flush mount, and 2-post center mount racking solutions
    • 8Mb Flash for system BIOS, video BIOS, SCSI BIOS, and ISA/PCI configuration.
    • Integrated PCI video (ATI Rage XL) with 8MB SDRAM.
Key Differences

Key differences from the PowerEdge 1550 include:

  • Two choices of PCI riser cards:
    • Two full height 64/66 PCI slots (1 full length/ 1 half length).
    • Two full height PCI slots (1 full length 32/33, 1 half length 64/66)
  • Integrated dual channel SCSI controller (AIC-7899W/U160).
  • Two independent VRM8.5 modules (soldered down, as in 1550-T)
  • Dual hot-plug 1+1 275W power supplies.
  • No terminator module is required.
  • ESM3 with an optional front bezel Active ID
  • Bezel intrusion is not monitored, only chassis intrusion.
  • Optional Embedded Remote Assistant Option (ERA/O).
  • New and improved chassis
  • New SCSI hot swap backplane (3 x 1" drive slots)
  • Support for three U160 hard drives
  • IDE disk support (w/o SCSI backplane)
  • Dual integrated Gigabit Ethernet controllers (Intel 82544GC).
  • New ROMB support:
    • No internal SCSI connector. Internal SCSI bus is integrated in the backplane-system board connector. ROMB is the only RAID option for internal SCSI drives.
    • ROMB is an optional board with integrated battery and memory modules.
