Dell PowerEdge 4600

SCSI Backplane

The PowerEdge 4600 backplane uses a modular design consisting of a backplane circuit board and an optional daughter board termination card.

This is a picture of the PowerEdge 4600 backplane subsystem

Key features of the SCSI backplane:
  • Eight hot-plug capable Ultra3/LVD SCSI slots with three LED indicators per slot
  • Two 68-pin SCSI connectors for connecting LVD SCSI controllers to the backplane
  • A set of quick-switches for splitting the SCSI bus
  • One slot for connecting a daughter card board to the backplane
  • The SCSI backplane will operate in a 1 x 8 or a 2 x 4 configuration
  • In order to split the backplane the daughter card must be inserted
  • Empty drive bays use a blank drive carrier to maintain proper cooling, a uniform appearance to the unit, and to provide EMI shielding
 Removing the SCSI Backplane
Step 1: Disconnect the SCSI cables and the power cables from the backplane.

This picture illustrates where the SCSI and power cables can be disconnected

Step 2: Loosen the thumbscrew located on the backplane.

Step 3: Slide the SCSI backplane away from the system board and lift it towards the back of the system.

Daughter Board

The 1 x 8 SCSI backplane can be split to a 2 x 4 via the installation of an optional daughter board. Below are the steps for removing the optional daughter board.

Before removing the split backplane card, the following steps must be performed:
  • Remove the front bezel.
  • Remove the system cover.
 Removing the Daughter Board
Step 1: Pull the split backplane card handle to create a 90° angle with the card.
