Data Recovery

One of the key features of business continuance is data recovery. Even in storage systems designed for high data availability, problems can occur that result in data loss. Data recovery minimizes the impact of storage system failures and allows administrators to restore critical data with minimal impact to the business environment. Disaster recovery allows data to be recovered in the event of a catastrophic event, such as physical damage to the site where the storage solution is housed.

Tape drives have extremely high capacities at relatively economical costs, so they are suitable for data backups and data archiving. Tapes are also portable and can be relocated to a secure offsite location, ensuring business-critical data is protected from a catastrophic event at the primary storage site.

Section Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:
  • Describe the need for data recovery.

  • Differentiate the two types of tape technology.

  • Identify and describe four types of tape media.
