Linear Tape Open

Linear Tape Open (LTO) is an open storage platform co-developed by several computer and storage manufacturers. LTO has two formats, Ultrium and Accelis. Dell LTO tape units are based on the Ultrium format. Ultrium LTO drives have a single-reel format very much like DLT. The tape cartridges feature failsafe leader captures. The Accelis format uses dual-reel tape cartridges.

Ultrium incorporates the best features of existing tape storage technologies and further enhances them to create a new level for data integrity, performance, and reliability. These technologies include linear multichannel recording, timing-based servo, data compression, track layout, and error correction codes. Each was chosen for its reliability and contribution to the future growth of Ultrium technology.
