Dell PowerEdge 4600

Embedded Network Interface Controllers

The PowerEdge 4600 server includes an embedded BroadCom Gigabit Ethernet controller and an embedded Intel Pro/100+ Ethernet controller. This dual embedded solution eliminates the need to take up a valuable PCI slot with a NIC, while maintaining high network availability with features such as:

  • Failover support
  • Wake-on-LAN support (WOL)
  • Network traffic load-balancing
Additionally, the two embedded NIC controllers and their support circuitry are installed onto the PowerEdge 4600 system board as independent Ethernet interface devices to increase the bandwidth and better manage the traffic of the network.

BroadCom 10/100/1000BASE-T NIC

The BroadCom Ethernet controller uses the BCM5700 MAC and BMC5401 PHY IC's to generate the 10/100/1000 NIC controller solution. The BCM5700 is a high-performance 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet LAN controller optimized for NIC and LOM (LAN On Motherboard) applications. The BCM5700 is a highly integrated solution combining 10/100/100BASE-T IEEE 802.3 compliant Media Access Controller (MAC), PCI and PCI-X bus interfaces, and on-chip buffer memory in a single device. The BCM5700 is fabricated in a low voltage 1.8V CMOS process, providing a low power system solution. Combining the BCM5700 with the BCM5401 the PowerEdge 4600 server will achieve a complete NIC or LOM solution for 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet.

Intel 82559 10/100 NIC

The 82559 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet controller, with an integrated 10/100 Mbps physical layer device, is Intel's leading solution for PCI board LAN designs. It is designed for use in Network Interface Cards (NICs), PC LAN On Motherboard (LOM) designs, embedded systems and networking system products. The 82559 combines low power requirements with a small-package design, making it ideal for power- and space-constrained environments.

This device is equivalent in function to the Intel Pro/100+ network card and uses the same operating system drivers. The 82559 will reside on PCI Bus0 operating at 32/33. The Intel Pro/100+ incorporates 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX technology, supporting data transfer rates per port of 10 and 100Mb/s. It supports SNMP agents, DMI 2.0, and Wired for Management 1.1 standards. By supporting these standards, the Pro/100+ is manageable through most management frameworks.
