Objective 3- Identify Dell's rack mounting systems and accessories for use in racking systems:
  • "U" (approximately 1.75") is the industry standard for height of server rack components.

  • Dell rack systems are available in 24U and 42U sizes.

Objective 4- Identify System Setup Program (BIOS) options found on PowerEdge servers and explain the effect these settings have on system function:

The settings and formats for the following PowerEdge System Setup Programs are detailed in the course:

  • One-page format, used on the PowerEdge 4600, PowerEdge 2550, PowerEdge 2500, and PowerEdge 1550.

  • Two-page format, used on the PowerEdge 6400 and PowerEdge 4400.

  • Five-page format, used on the PowerEdge 8450 and PowerEdge 7150.

Objective 5- Identify the correct procedure for updating the BIOS, implementing an asset tag, and updating firmware on a PowerEdge server:
  • The ESM is used to flash the firmware on hardware connected to the system management bus (this can include the SCSI backplane, PCI slots, PCI hot-plug and power supply board).

  • Updated BIOS and ESM flash files are available at support.dell.com, or on the update CDs sent out as part of the OpenManage Subscription Service.

  • The correct procedure is to always flash the system BIOS first, and then reboot and flash the system ESM.

Objective 6- Identify the correct procedure for using the Dell Server Assistant to set up drive arrays and install supported Microsoft operating systems on a PowerEdge server:
  • The DSA contains server setup options that should be used to streamline operating system installs on PowerEdge servers.

  • Array Manager is the preferred tool for creating drive arrays.

Objective 7- Identify the correct procedure for using the support applications found on the PowerEdge utility partition and the Dell Server Assistant:
  • Selecting <F10> at the appropriate time during system POST will cause the server to enter the utility partition.

  • The RCU should be used to configure expansion cards on the PowerEdge 4400, PowerEdge 6400, and PowerEdge 6450. It is recommended that cards be left unlocked to allow the RCU to function properly.

  • Dell Diagnostics should be used to confirm and isolate suspected hardware failures.

This ends the online course for Dell PowerEdge Server Foundations. Good luck on successfully completing the certification exam!
