PowerEdge System Components

This module will provide an overview of the various system components used in PowerEdge servers. Knowledge of standard desktop PC technology is assumed, so the focus will be on components unique to PowerEdge servers.

Upon completion of this section of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify common features of PowerEdge system boards using both slotted and socketed Intel® processors.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of PowerEdge power supply technologies, including identifying the difference between PSPBs and PSDBs.

  • Define a PERC and the naming conventions for the PERC family.

  • Identify the components required to enable an integrated PERC.

  • Identify the procedure for entering and navigating the Setup Program used for Adaptec-based PERCs.

  • Identify the procedure for entering and navigating the Setup Program used for AMI-based PERCs.

  • Identify a SCSI backplane and define the term "splitting" in relation to backplanes.

  • Identify features of current PowerEdge networking solutions.

  • Identify a remote management card and define its purpose.

This course will focus on the technologies used to create PowerEdge servers; it will not cover specifications of particular servers. Specifications and available configurations for the various PowerEdge Server models are available on the www.dell.com and premiersupport.dell.com Web sites, or in the server's user manual.

To provide background for some of the systems covered in this course, please spend a few minutes reviewing the currently available server systems here:
