PowerEdge Server
System Setup Program (BIOS) and Firmware

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) provides the fundamental level of communication between PowerEdge server hardware and the system software. Understanding the features of the System Setup program is crucial to working with PowerEdge systems. Servers may also have flashable firmware modules for various hardware components that must be maintained. This module will introduce the different System Setup Program interfaces encountered on PowerEdge servers and provide tips for firmware and BIOS maintenance. Upon completion of this section of the course, you will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between server firmware and the BIOS.

  • Define ESM.

  • Describe how to obtain update files and update the BIOS and firmware on a PowerEdge server.

  • Display knowledge of how to navigate the three different types of System Setup Programs used on PowerEdge servers.

  • Explain what the EFI is and what purpose it serves.
