The Dell Server Assistant

All PowerEdge servers ship from the factory with the latest version of Dell OpenManage, a software package designed to assist IT professionals in management and maintenance of the system. The latest version of the OpenManage package may also be received through the Dell OpenManage Subscription Service (as discussed previously here).

One of the CDs included in the OpenManage package is the Dell Server Assistant (DSA). Included on the DSA CD are:

  • Drivers, BIOS and firmware updates, and system utilities

  • A program that simplifies and accelerates the installation of supported operating systems on PowerEdge servers

  • Dell Array Manager, which provides a graphical interface for management of drive arrays connected to PowerEdge servers

The discussion of the Dell Server Assistant in this course covers version 6.x, available with version 2.x of the OpenManage Applications CD.

This section of the course will cover the procedures for using the Dell Server Assistant CD to install software and perform maintenance tasks on PowerEdge servers. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the different screens found on the DSA CD and the functions they perform.

  • Identify the correct procedure for installing Microsoft Windows NT4 using the DSA CD.

  • Identify the correct procedure for installing Microsoft Windows 2000 using the DSA CD.

  • Identify the correct procedure for configuring drive arrays using the DSA CD.
