Dell PowerEdge 1650

Integrated Ethernet Controllers

The PowerEdge 1650 system board includes dual embedded Intel® PRO/1000 XT Network Connection 82544GC Gigabit Ethernet controllers capable of supporting 10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, and 1000 Mb/s data rates. The controllers also support load balancing and failover.

This is a picture of the 1650 NIC ports

This single-chip device manages both the MAC and PHY layer functions, and is optimized for LAN on motherboard (LOM) designs, enterprise networking, and Internet appliances that use the PCI or PCI-X buses. The NIC is connected to a 64-bit/66MHz interface PCI bus that supports the PCI Local Bus Specification (revision 2.2).

Key Features of the the Intel Pro 1000:

  • Supports multi-NOS environments
  • Power management capabilities
  • Adapter fault tolerance (AFT) support
  • Adapter load balancing (ALB) support
  • Fast Ether Channel (FEC) support
  • Gigabit Ether Channel (GEC) support
  • IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation support
  • 802.1Q VLAN support
  • Wake on LAN support (through Magic packet, pattern recognition and ping)
  • Full duplex support at both 10 and 100 Mbps operation. (1000 Mbps is always full-duplex by default)
  • IEEE 802.3u Auto-Negotiation support
  • Low power 3.3 V device

The embedded Intel® PRO/1000 XT Network Connection provides an interface to the host processor by using on-chip command and status registers and a shared host-memory area. The architecture is optimized to deliver high network performance, PCI/PCI-X bus efficiency, and low CPU utilization. Through hardware acceleration, the controller can offload various tasks from the host processor, such as TCP/UDP/ IP checksum calculations and TCP segmentation.

Fully integrated physical-layer circuitry provides a standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet interface for 10Base-T, 100Base-TX, and 1000Base-T applications (802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab). And, with the addition of an appropriate serializer/deserializer (SERDES), the Intel 82544EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller alternatively provides an Ethernet interface for 1000Base-SX or LX applications (802.3z).
