Dell PowerEdge 2650

Embedded Network Controllers

The PowerEdge 2650 includes dual embedded BroadCom Gigabit Ethernet controllers. This dual embedded solution eliminates the need to take up a valuable PCI slot with a NIC. Features include: failover support, Wake-on-LAN (WOL) support and network traffic load-balancing. This is a 10/100/1000 BaseT product that will support any of the 3 speeds of BaseT Ethernet (10Mbit, 100Mbits, or 1000Mbits).

The Gigabit technology offers the highest bandwidth Ethernet option currently available and the PowerEdge 2650's architecture is configured to maximize throughput, with the NICs located on a dedicated high bandwidth PCI-X bus. If one of the embedded NICs fails, the load from the failed NIC can be transferred over to the second embedded NIC to avoid unexpected downtime.

Both NICs support WOL in 10 or 100 Mbit mode. However, support for WOL is not provided in 1000 Mbit mode. In addition, both NICs will support Pre-Boot Execution (PXE).

Both devices support SNMP agents, DMI 2.0, and Wired for Management 1.1 standards, so they are manageable through most management frameworks. In addition, both devices support Wake on LAN (WOL) technology, allowing you to remotely power on the server over the network.

BroadCom 10/100/1000BASE-T NIC

The BroadCom Ethernet controller uses the BCM5700 MAC and BMC5411 PHY IC's to generate the 10/100/1000 NIC controller solution. The BCM5700 is a high-performance 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet LAN controller optimized for NIC and LOM applications. The BCM5700 is a highly integrated solution combining 10/100/100BASE-T IEEE 802.3 compliant Media Access Controller (MAC), PCI and PCI-X bus interfaces, and on-chip buffer memory in a single device. The BCM5700 is fabricated in a low voltage 1.8V CMOS process, providing a low-power system solution.
