PCI/PCI-X Expansion Slots

The PowerEdge 2650 utilizes 5 PCI buses to provide 3.2 GB/s of I/O bandwidth. The I/O architecture supports three 64-bit slots on two peer PCI-X buses. There are two slots on bus 1 and one slot on bus 2. Finally, there are dual embedded gigabit NICs on the third PCI-X bus.

  • These slots accept PCI cards designed for 66Mhz or 33Mhz and will operate in PCI mode at the lowest common frequency for that bus.
  • PCI-X cards may co-exist with PCI cards on a bus and will operate in PCI mode; the slots will only operate in PCI-X mode if populated exclusively with PCI-X cards
  • All slots are 3V-signaling environment compatible and will accept either 3V PCI and PCI-X cards, or universal PCI cards.

    PCI Bus Scan Order

    The 2650 BIOS scans and numbers the PCI buses and devices during startup. Expansion slots are scanned according to the host bus ordering, not by the slot numbers. See below for the order in which the expansion slots and embedded PCI devices are scanned.

    An additional factor affects the assignment of PCI bus numbers: an expansion card may have its own PCI bridge chip. This requires the assignment of a bus number for the card as well as one for the bridge. A particular expansion card may have two PCI bridge chips, which would result in three sequential PCI bus numbers all assigned in the same expansion slot.

    If you install expansion cards, you may have some difficulty in directly determining the bus number of a controller on a particular expansion card. However, the PCI bus scan order listed below can help determine the relative numbering of PCI buses within the expansion slots. For example, a PCI controller residing in expansion slot 3 will never have a lower bus number than one located in slot 2, because slot 2 precedes slot 3 in the scan order.

    PCI-X

    PCI eXtended (PCI-X or PCIx) is the next generation local I/O standard that provides high bandwidth, low latency, dedicated hardware interfaces between internal chips and peripheral cards. With 64-bit/133MHz architecture, PCI-X provides total I/O bandwidth up to 1GB/s at its peak. This is 8 times more bandwidth than the 32-bit/33MHz implementation, which allows for only 133MB/s peak bandwidth.

    The benefits of PCI-X implementation in the PowerEdge 2650 are:
    • Performance
      • Burst transfer rates up to 800MB/s
      • Split transactions and zero wait state for read completions improve the bus efficiency (allows devices to make a request, and then releases the bus for use by other peripherals until the responding device is ready with the data requested. This ensures that no bus time is wasted, even if the responding device is forced to stall and restart transmission)
      • Standard block size movements with 128-byte boundaries prevent any single process from monopolizing the bus with a single large transfer.
    • Investment protection and seamless transition from PCI to PCI-X
      • Fully interoperable and easy design migration with conventional PCI (PCI-X systems can accept standard PCI cards and PCI-X cards can work in current PCI systems)
      • No OS or driver changes required (only the hot-plug system driver, if needed)
      • PCI-X has a huge foundation of infrastructure to build on and it also integrates well with distributed I/O standards such as InfiniBand
      • Low cost

    Disassembly
     Removing An Expansion Card

    Perform the following steps prior to removing an expansion card:

    • Remove the front bezel.
    • Remove the system cover.
    • Remove the expansion card cage.

    Step 3: If you are removing the card permanently, install a metal filler bracket over the empty expansion slot opening and close the expansion card latch.

    IMPORTANT - More Information NOTE: You must install a filler bracket over an empty expansion slot to maintain Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification of the system. The brackets also keep dust and dirt out of the system and aid in proper cooling and airflow inside the system.

    PCI Riser
    The PCI riser card includes a plastic actuation handle that can be used to install and remove the component without using tools.

    IMPORTANT - More Information NOTE: The PowerEdge 2650 will not power up if the riser is not installed.

    • Remove the front bezel.
    • Remove the system cover.
