Dell PowerEdge 2650

Accessing the Fans

The PowerEdge 2650 incorporates three different fan assemblies. The fans are hot-pluggable and fully redundant, meaning that any single fan in the system can fail and the remaining fans are able to cool the system adequately.

Since the fans are hot-pluggable, you can replace any single fan without shutting down the system. Each fan includes a connector that plugs directly into the system board, simplifying fan removal and installation.

Three different fan types are required in the PowerEdge 2650: power supply fans, PCI riser fans, and processor fans.
This is a picture of the PowerEdge 2650 power supply, riser, and processor fans

  • Power supply fans (2): mounted to the back of the chassis. Each system comes standard with two of these fans.

  • PCI riser fan (1): mounted on the PCI riser bracket. Each system comes with one fan mounted in this location, and it may be removed independently of the PCI riser assembly.

  • Processor fan (1 or 2): mounted to the processor and the heatsink assembly. Each system comes with a single fan per processor. If there are two processors in the system, there will be two processor fans. There is a mounting location for a second fan on each processor, in the event that future processor speeds require additional cooling.
  • IMPORTANT - More Information   NOTE: Multiple assemblies were required to meet the cooling needs of the high performance Intel Xeon processors.

Below is a description of the fan numbering scheme; see the diagram for further clarification.

     Fan Location  Fan Number

Power Supply fan left (looking from the front) 1
Power Supply fan right (looking from the front) 2
    Processor fan (secondary processor) 3
    Processor fan (primary processor) 4
    Riser Fan 7

IMPORTANT - More Information   NOTE: Fan numbers 5 and 6 are reserved for future expansion.
