SCSI Tape Controller: Adaptec 7892 SCSI Controller

The PowerEdge 6650 provides one internal SCSI channel provided by an Adaptec AIC-7892 controller embedded on the Legacy I/O board. This is a U160 LVD single channel controller used for tape devices only, and the connection is found on the top of the Legacy I/O board. In the PowerEdge 6650 it will only support external tape devices.

For the PowerEdge 6650, the controller is always cabled to the external VHDCI connector, because there is no peripheral bay for an internal tape drive.

Internal hard drive support is provided by PCI adapters with full SCSI RAID support.

The 7892 SCSI controller resides on the PCI 32-bit/33MHz bus. The BIOS for the 7892 is included in the PowerEdge 6650 system BIOS. A voltage regulator provides 2.85V and guarantees a minimum of 800mA, which the 7892 specification states is required by the controller. A right-angle standard 68-pin SCSI connector lies at the top edge of the Legacy I/O board, allowing for easy cable and user access.
