Managing Networked Components

Hardware

Dell provides hardware management for the Latitude™, Dell Precision™, OptiPlex™, PowerEdge™, PowerVault™, and some PowerApp™ systems. These systems are equipped with instrumentation based on the Common Information Model (CIM), Desktop Management Interface (DMI), and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) industry standards. Instrumentation is the software layer that allows management application programs to interact directly with systems hardware. This instrumentation allows customers to inventory and monitor the overall health of their systems.

Operating Systems and Applications

Dell delivers operating systems that include integrated management capabilities. Microsoft, Linux, and Novell provide base management utilities in their operating systems for installation, configuration, maintenance, and diagnostics. Dell maintains close relationships with key systems management vendors including Computer Associates, Tivoli, Microsoft, NetIQ, Hewlett-Packard and others. These vendors offer management solutions that allow Dell customers to monitor complete systems (hardware, operating systems, and application programs), with a particular emphasis on application programs.

Dell's relationship with these vendors results in two types of solutions for customers.

  • Dell OpenManage Connections is software that snaps into the major enterprise frameworks, such as Computer Associates Unicenter TNG, Tivoli Enterprise Console, and Hewlett-Packard OpenView NNM for Windows, and allows customers to effectively manage Dell systems. From these enterprise frameworks, customers can monitor critical software applications such as E-commerce.
  • Dell OpenManage PowerSuites are turnkey solutions that include hardware, software, and services to form a complete management environment. For example, today, customers can buy a Dell server with Microsoft Windows NTŪ, Microsoft SQL Server, and all the services needed to deploy the server and clients in a single package.
