Deployment of OpenManage Applications

OpenManage tools can be deployed in one, two, or three layers depending on whether you want to manage your server from its physical location, from a centralized management server, or from a remote console accessing a centralized management server.

One–Layer Deployment
  • Management of the server is done from the server itself.

  • Two possible approaches:
    • OMSA (OpenManage Systems Management CD 3.x) is installed as a complete management solution.
    • OMSA (OpenManage Systems Management CD 3.x) or Server Agent (OpenManage Applications CD 2.x) is installed with IT Assistant on the same server.

  • The OMSA GUI can be accessed either locally or remotely at https://IP_address:1311. Note that it uses a secure connection. The default port of 1311 can be changed to one of your choosing.

Two–Layer Deployment
  • Management of multiple server or client systems is done from a management station.

  • IT Assistant is installed on the client or server to be used as a management station. It is also used as the management console. More than one management station can exist in this second layer.

  • OMSA or Server Agent is installed on each server and OpenManage Client Instrumentation (OMCI) is installed on each client system (OptiPlex desktop PCs, Latitude notebooks, Precision Workstations).

Three–Layer Deployment
  • An administrator accesses the management station from a Web-based console at any location with network access to the management station.

  • IT Assistant is installed on the client or server to be used as a management station. Management data is stored on this management station. More than one management station can exist in this second layer.

  • OMSA or Server Agent is installed on each server and OMCI is installed on each client system.
