Dell OpenManage Server Agent

OpenManage Server Agent provides the foundation for access to Dell PowerEdge server instrumentation. By installing the Server Agent on each Dell server, you can monitor hardware events from the Dell OpenManage IT Assistant, as well as a variety of other systems management frameworks.

The Server Agent resides on each managed Dell server and monitors server health and performance while reporting any predefined threshold breaches to the appropriate manager (IT Assistant or other management console). The Dell Server Agent communicates with a management station primarily via the SNMP protocol.

OpenManage Client Instrumentation

Dell also provides manageability for its OptiPlex desktop, Latitude notebook, and Precision workstation client systems. The "agent" for these systems is called OpenManage Client Instrumentation (OMCI).

OMCI provides similar functionality to that of the Server Agent, but relies more heavily on DMI and CIM. Like the Server Agent, OMCI communicates alerts to the IT Assistant or other management console.

The client instrumentation is not included on the OpenManage CD set. It may be factory installed on some of the product lines above — or it can be downloaded from the Dell support website.
