Server Diagnostics

Dell OpenManage Server Diagnostics are provided as a stand-alone application with the Dell OpenManage Applications CD 2.x. Newer versions of the OpenManage tools incorporate the same functionality within the OpenManage Server Administrator and do not provide a separate application for diagnostics.

The Dell OpenManage Server Diagnostics provide detection and isolation of hardware problems in PowerEdge systems. This online diagnostic lets you run hardware diagnostic tests while still running the Microsoft operating system. (These OpenManage diagnostic routines are related to, but different from, other Dell Diagnostics which can be run from diskettes or from the utility partition. The diskette-based diagnostics require bringing a server down for a reboot from the diskettes.)

OpenManage Server Diagnostics are installed on the managed node. Many tests can be run remotely, although some require local user participation (inserting a CD-ROM to test the operation of a CD-ROM drive, for example).

Server Diagnostics does not use a "Management Station/Managed Node" architecture, but is instead a peer to peer application. Once proper authentication credentials are provided, any server with Server Diagnostics installed can be used to remotely test any other server with a known IP address that also has Server Diagnostics installed. If a management station happens to be a Dell server, it can be used to run Server Diagnostics on a remote server. However, since Server Diagnostics can only be installed on a server, if a desktop computer or workstation is being used as the management station another system (a server) will have to be used to initiate the remote testing.

Available test modules include:

  • SCSI test
  • CMOS test
  • Serial port internal test
  • Parallel port internal test
  • CPU test
  • Hard drive test
  • Modem test
  • Memory test
  • NIC test
  • PCI bus test
  • SMART drive test
  • Extended SMART drive test
  • DVD/CD-ROM test
  • Diskette drive test
  • Printer test
  • And other component tests...
