PowerEdge System Components

Socketed System Boards

The PowerEdge 2500 and 2550 share the same system board design. These systems use either one or two socket 370 processors. The memory is installed directly into slots on the system board instead of on a separate memory card.

PE 2550 MB Features

The bulleted list below provides a description of the items found in the image above starting at the bottom and proceeding clockwise.

  • Primary and Secondary Processor Sockets: the PowerEdge 2550 supports socketed Intel processors, unlike the PowerEdge 6400, which supports slotted processors. The 2550 will support one or two.

  • Primary and Secondary VRMs are sockets for the Voltage Regulator Modules needed by the processors. A VRM must be installed for each socket that has a processor installed.

  • ROMB DIMM Socket is a socket that holds memory for the optional integrated RAID controller found on the PowerEdge 2550. RAID controllers are discussed in detail later in the course.

  • Gigabit and 10/100 are the ports for the integrated Network Interface Controllers found on the system board of the PowerEdge 2550. These controllers are covered later in the course.

  • SCSI A,B are the ports for the onboard SCSI/RAID controller.

  • ROMB Key Socket is used for enabling the RAID On MotherBoard (integrated RAID controller).

  • System DIMM Modules are installed directly on the PowerEdge 2550 system board, as no riser card is used in this system.

  • The backplane connector is used for attaching the SCSI backplane (explained in a later section) cable to the system board.

  • Power 1 is used to connect the system board to the power supply board.

The PowerEdge 4600's system board is pictured below. It features Intel's next generation Xeon® processors and PCI-X technology. PCI-X slots are 64-bit slots operating at either 66 MHz or 100 MHz.
