PowerEdge System Components

Memory Riser Card

Some PowerEdge servers (such as the PowerEdge 6400) use a memory riser card instead of having the memory installed directly in the system board. The memory card inserts into the "Memory 1 and 2" connectors on the system board. At least four DIMMs are required to be installed on the memory riser card for the server to function. Memory must be added four DIMMs at a time.

NOTE   NOTE: An improperly seated memory card will cause a server to fail POST. Reseating the memory card is a useful troubleshooting step when the system fails the POST.

The PowerEdge 4600 memory system resides on two separate memory riser cards, which are attached to the system board via a single-edge type (330-pin) connector. The two memory cards together provide 288-bit wide memory port. Because of the server's chipset architecture, both memory cards with at least two DIMMs in each need to be present in the system at all times.
