Power Supply Paralleling Board (PSPB)

The PowerEdge 6400 uses a power board called Power Supply Paralleling Board (or PSPB), which provides an interface between the system board and the power supplies found on the system.

Power Supply Paralleling Backplane

The PSPB distributes the power load of the server across multiple power supplies as well as providing redundancy by supporting a failover power supply.

As an example, a PSPB equipped server using 3 power supplies in an N + 1 configuration could have three 200-watt power supplies installed. Two of the power supplies would work together to provide the system with 400 watts of power, while the third 200-watt power supply would be waiting to become active should either of the other two fail. A new 200-watt supply could then be swapped for the failed unit without shutting the server down.
